Father of four arrested for abusing newborns
January 11, 2007
A New Jersey couple, dubed the “Quad Squad’ after the birth of quadruplets last October, have come under media attention due to the actions of the father. It was reported this week that he was arrested for abusing the newborns and charged with four counts of endangering the welfare of a child. His wife said the man she knew as a loving husband and father had apparently cracked under the strain of caring for the children. It’s not clear what exactly the father did.
According to the accused’s wife…
“The babies were crying. He got overwhelmed.”
She referred to him as a gentle man who never exhibited any sign of violence, either toward her or the boys.
“I’ve been with him a very long time,” she said. “If he had been violent in any way, I wouldn’t be with him. He doesn’t have a violent bone in his body.”
Wow. As a father of four myself, I can imagine how he might have felt. I originally became a father of twins and felt overwhelmed. Ultimately I went from zero to four over the course of three years.
This man went from zero to four instantly and within a short time, continuous exhaustion and stress took it’s toll on him. The needs of infants are round the clock. Feeding them repeatedly, changing them, comforting them to stop the seemingly endless crying. Plus, the husband presumably had to be working to support all of them. I’m not saying that abusing the newborn(s) is excusable. I’m just saying it must’ve been rough on all of them.
The concern and focus is now on the welfare of the children. I certainly hope this family can come together once again and the father can regain their trust.
