Study Claims Children Adapt Quickly to Contact Lens Wear

January 11, 2008

Contact LensAccording to a study, 83% of children and 89% of teen participants adapted to contact lens wear and maintenance within three months.

“Children and teens in the study physiologically adjusted to contact lens wear similarly, and both age groups provided adequate contact lens care. The researchers concluded eye care professionals should consider routinely offering contact lenses as a treatment option, even for children as young as 8 years of age.”

The study also assessed the parent’s opinions of how their child/teen may have complied with lens care practices and if there was noted improvement in other behavioral aspects.

It’s important to note that this the survey was sponsored by a leading contact lens manufacturer.

I’ve said this before: Considering how wild a child can be — running around, playing rough, participating in sports — it’s inevitable that a child may break his/her eyeglasses by accident. Also, other children can be cruel and criticize their victim for every tiny thing, especially being “4 eyes.”

When you consider how fragile a child’s self esteem can be, contact lenses may be an option to consider with proper training and overseeing.
