Video Gaming For Senior Health
January 12, 2008
I noticed a local announcement that the local High School students “will spend their annual Day of Service sharing expertise in technology, such as computers and Wii game system, at the county Senior Wellness Center.” My gut reaction was seniors wont have any interest. But surprisingly, I’ve read that the Wii game system and sports games are good for helping seniors become more active.
The Wii has a unique set of remotes that allows users to swing their arms to make movements that mimic activities like swinging a tennis racquet, golf club or bowling ball. As you can imagine this can be used for a wide range of physical therapy and aerobic activity. I got to play the Wii and really enjoyed it. But we’ve decided not to buy one for our kids — they do enough damage in our house swinging things around.
So overall, I think it’s awesome that the students are encouraged to visit seniors and introduce them to something they may benefit from.
So how about you? Do you know any seniors who are playing the Wii? Are your kids introducing new things to their grandparents? Please share your stories.

I think it’s a fantastic idea, possible injuries aside!
There is a big difference between older people and younger people that manifests itself in claims of ‘no respect’ and ‘ignorance’. With this both sides of the age gap will benefit from being educated what each other is about, how they live their lives, what is available to them, and what they enjoy.

Nicely said. Anything that can bridge the gap and build respect between the younger and older generations is a positive thing. Thanks for commenting, Biff.
