Celebritards
January 22, 2008
I’ve tried to avoid bashing the immature behavior of Britney Spears, Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan, Jamie Lynn Spears and their ilk. But it gets harder with the mass media making sure I know every scandalous detail everywhere I turn for news. Here’s the latest I stumbled on over the weekend: Young Celebrities Prompting Early Obits …
Now news that The Associated Press has prepared an obituary for 26-year-old Britney Spears has put the spotlight on a debate transpiring within the business of reporting death: With people grabbing the celebrity spotlight at a younger age, and some of them living lives of obviously dangerous excess, is it time for news organizations to begin preparing for early exits from celebritydom’s under-30 crowd?
Even the up and coming crop of “squeaky clean” role models are tainted with skeletons. Vanessa Hudgens has been burned by topless photos. Ashley Tisdal has taken criticism over her nose job (why can’t you be happy with yourself?). The media is desperate for something to rip Miley Cyrus, aka Hannah Montana, with (so far the vultures only can criticize her use of a double during her performance to allow her to change costumes quicker.)
Don’t worry, I didn’t forget Jessica Simpson. We’ll actually, other than that “Tuna of the Sea” duh moment and divorce, I haven’t noticed anything scandalous about her… except the Jessica Jinx rumors. Her younger sister Ashlee is got stung by the infamous Saturday Night Live lip-sync. Hopefully she’s smart enough to keep a straight path.
I’ve probably missed a few. Then again, I don’t really care. What bothers me is how it makes parenting that much harder as children become exposed to more media outlets.
Our buddy Vinny, aka Digital Father, expressed his concerns recently and tells us about conversations with his children to get their perspective.
Most of these “celebrities” seem determined to continue down the path of self-destruction, oblivious to the harm their causing on impressionable youths. Hopefully they wont destroy too many lives on their way to the morgue.
Please share your thoughts. Are your children aware of these celebrities? Do you talk to your children about it?
