Awesome Mom vs Bad Dad: Essential 80’s Music Collection
February 13, 2008
Thought we’d take a break (from being grumpy about careless insurance companies and dangerous toys made in China) and have a little fun. Our official Freakedout Father down under issued a challenge to craft an “Essentials” list.
My wife has excellent taste in music (IMHO), so I suggested we compare notes (spontaneous, in no particular order):
Essential 80’s Music Collection

Bad Dad says:

Honorable mentions:
- Thriller by Michael Jackson
- I still haven’t found what I’m looking for by U2
- Every little thing by The Police
- Every day I write the book by Elvis Costello
- Legs by ZZ Top
Note: I called Editor’s prerogative and did not include anything by Culture Club, Warrant or Devo. (I have to draw a line somewhere.)
So, what’s your favorite music from the 80’s?

Your wife wins! Split Enz? Squeeze? The only thing missing from her list is XTC. Here’s my everchanging Top Ten 80’s songs:
1. “Love Plus One” by Haircut 100
2. “Senses Working Overtime” by XTC
3. “Live It Up” by Mental As Anything
4. “Don’t Dream It’s Over” by Crowded House
5. “Oblivious” by Aztec Camera
6. “Tempted” by Squeeze
7. “In A Big Country” by Big Country
8. “The Look of Love” by ABC
9. “Valotte” by Julian Lennon
10. “Our House” by Madness
Five Leftovers:
11. “Balloon Man” by Robyn Hitchcock
12. “Ana Ng” by They Might Be Giants
13. “Place In The Country” by Adam Ant
14. “She Blinded Me With Science” by Thomas Dolby
15. “So. Central Rain” by R.E.M.
Man, Squeeze is getting a big mention here and I don’t even remember them! Some great songs so far! I too struggled with XTC and Eye of the Tiger … just didn’t have room on my CD for them!
And an American picking a Split Enz song? I am thoroughly impressed!
