How To Subscribe To A Podcast – Video Tutorial

October 9, 2007

Bad Dad's Tech TipPodcasts are a wonderful source of entertainment. Generally speaking, ordinary people like you and me decide they have something to share and publish it online for others to enjoy — for free! Community participation is what inspires podcasters to continue to publish content.

Podcasts come in audio and video formats, covering most every subject imaginable. If you haven’t done so, I suggest you take some time to explore the breadth of content and creativity out there.

To get you started, I recorded a brief video tutorial (7 min) explaining the basics of how to subscribe to a podcast. You’ll learn:

  • The fancy buzzwords.
  • Podcatching software to make subscribing and organizing easy.
  • How to subscribe to any podcast.
  • How to find RSS feed links you need.

I hope you find this useful. Enjoy!

Once You’re Outnumbered, It Doesn’t Matter By How Many

September 27, 2007

When Awesome Mom and I we’re in Moscow many years ago, we met a man waiting to leave the country. He was adopting a young girl (around 8 years old). He said he was an accountant, lived in Long Island, and had 5 children already. I thought he was nuts. But he said something that I’ve never forgotten and often quote:

“Once you’re outnumbered, it doesn’t matter by how many.”

Fast forward seven years. We have four boys. Awesome Mom and I are definitely outnumbered. But I found this awesome widget for blogs:

You customize it with the expectant date and the number of babies expected. It then countdowns to the event with little fetus’ floating around and growing larger over time. How cool is that!

I’m a glutton for punishment. So, I’ll have to throw down the gauntlet for Awesome Mom. Let’s shoot for quadruplets … by New Years Day … so we can use the widget (of course). What do you say?

BD-019 – A Real Man’s Universal Remote (Vidcast)

September 6, 2007

Bad Dad's Tech TipI’m not a big couch potato, but I LOVE my
Logitech Harmony Universal Remote.

It’s like no other universal remote. Forget the $20 generic universal remotes you buy in the electronics section of Target. Invest in a serious device for serious equipment.

It certainly costs more, but the benefits are huge:

  • User customizable buttons to group specific devices together for certain functions.
  • Save time! One click to turn on/off a group of devices.
  • Save money! No need to waste all those batteries in five different remotes.
  • Save space! Hide those extra individual remotes.
  • Less confusion. A visual interface help with troubleshooting by asking you Yes/No questions to solve the problem.
  • Get the latest codes online for over 175,000 devices (i.e. TV, DVD, VCR, Tuner, Game system, Satellite box, Cable box).

Also, reduces the chance of kids screwing something up. If they somehow wipe the codes from the remote, simply plug it into your computer and download your custom settings again.

Hope you find this tech tip useful.
